The Veil (2016) : What the fuck ?

The Veil came out in 2016 to somehow mid reviews.

It follows a documentary crew returning to the site of a religious cult’s mass suicide 30 years later with the sole survivor.

The acting is great, Lily Rabe and Jessica Alba clearly can act their asses off… but the whole thing is very mid…

I had no idea what I was getting myself into, so imagine the biggest sigh ever made by a human when I saw the writing clearly taking everything from the Jim Jones Massacre at the very beginning.

They basically made a horror movie out of a real-life tragedy and just changed the names enough to not get sued.
This is both unethical and very disturbing.

Doing jump scares to scare teenagers is one thing, but exploiting the murders of real people to add a somewhat redeeming ending to the cult leader that murdered them all doesn’t sit right with me at all.
The Jonestown Massacre is known as a « cult suicide » but if you dug just a little bit more, you’d realise that those people didn’t willingly drink the Kool Aid, some were shot dead, some tried to flee,  the children were murdered…
Jim Jones was one of the worst human beings on the planet.

Jim Jacobs, in the movie, trying to save the kids at the end, everyone willingly eating the poison at the same time, and letting him win with the possession to prove that he was right ?
What the actual fuck ?

It’s like a movie saying the 9/11 terrorists were actual good guys, that they tried to avoid the towers and were nursing babies on board.
Do you realise how insane that sounds ?

The real massacre took place in 1978.
Their families are still alive. They might stumble onto this on Prime.
This makes me sick.

This movie had a pitch, a script, was shot, edited, and distributed and no one thought that maybe it shouldn’t ?

The whole thing would have been fine with any other premise.
You have a demonic cult, their souls are waiting for new bodies, they possess the ones that come to their place to investigate.

The deaths and the way they get back up with no blood or scars left me dumbfounded, but it could have worked through magic.
The effects are ok, the acting is good, the location is creepy, but for everyone’s sake, stop loving real life murderers.
These people are assholes, not gods amongst humans.

My rating : 1/5 just because Jim Jacobs should have never been on my screen.
