Hunter Hunter came out in 2020 to fairly good reviews.
Starring Devon Sawa (Final destination, the Chucky series, Idle hands, and so many more), it takes place mainly in the woods.
I really like Devon’s work and I have to admit that I’m glad that he was cast.
As a child in Casper he had that « heartthrob » look, but growing up, he can now also look like a rugged dude that has lived in the wilderness for a while.
And that is some range that is highly appreciated.
Mandatory trigger warnings
What is not is that the dog dies. At least we only see a brief moment of the aftermath. It’s not graphic or awful, but please stop killing the dogs in horror movies.
And also, this movie isn’t for the vegans.
There is a dead bear, a dead fawn, a rabbit,… It’s a hunting movie, so heads up.
Ok, now that’s out of the way.
Not everything is as peaceful as it seems
Joseph (Devon Sawa‘s character) lives in the mountains with his wife and daughter, and the home life is quite rough, especially when a wolf roams nearby, eating all their food.
I genuinely laughed when he tried to shoot it, while the wolf was carrying a human arm, but he didn’t seem to care at all.
Like it’s a random Tuesday.
The disconnect was fun.
When hunting one day he finds a circle of dead and naked female bodies.
I’m not going to lie, for a second I thought he was going to be the killer and the plot twist would be that he didn’t remember… Luckily the movie was better than that.
He sadly doesn’t tell anyone though, so as to not worry them, yeah, but still.
For a while, it’s a slow burn. Joseph disappears, food gets scarce, the wolf is still nearby…
And he poops out rings. So it’s fair to assume that there are more victims out there.
And then they hear a cry, that leads them to Lou, who appears to have been attacked as well.
Plot twist : spoiler ahead
What I truly like about Hunter Hunter is that they don’t show much at all.
It is tastefully executed and not a gore fest (aside for a warranted moment).
We don’t spend too much time on the deaths.
Either be it the women’s, the animals… or even Joseph.
Yep, he’s gone as well, and has been for a few days at least.
Spoiler : Lou’s actually the killing rapist.
After trying to attack the mother and knocking her unconscious, it is heavily hinted that the daughter went through it all and got killed.
The movie ends on some sweet sweet revenge as the mother skins alive the man who killed her entire family.
Is it believable ? Well, yes and no.
The revenge part is great, but he should be dead instead of blinking.
And knowing the cops in the US, they would have shot her the second she stepped out of the barn, no questions asked.
She was covered in blood, and they found him without any skin.
It doesn’t seem like they saw the daughter’s corpse prior either.
So yeah, that’s fantasy world.
But truth be told, we needed the breather of her sitting on her porch, after all she’d been through.
My rating : 4/5 bats
