While I will not review the other ones, I must admit that Scary movie is my guilty pleasure.
A little backstory
For a little bit of context that will, oddly enough, be necessary for the movie, here we go :
Scary movie 1 & 2 were done by the Wayans brothers. They are the best ones. No one can fight me on this.
Scary movie 3 was written by them but they were booted out of the project by the Weinstein brothers.
Anna Faris and Regina Hall starred in 3 & 4.
None of the core cast played in 5.
And now, 13 years later, we get Scary Movie 6 with the reunion we’ve all been waiting for, plus Carmen Electra.
A 20-year-old legacy
I thought the humour might be rough, and it sometimes is.
It’s hard to do 2000s jokes in 2026. It’s even harder to get them to land.
Some work great, some… less so.
The movie follows along the scripts of Scream 5 & 6, with little winks here and there to MA and way too many other movies.
I laughed, and had a good time, but I think my expectations were too high because of nostalgia.
I watch the first one with rose-colored glasses. Having a brand new one disturbs my habits and, while it might be great for future me, now me has to sit with it a bit longer to really like it.
How many references do you want ? Wayans brothers : Yes.
One thing that took me out is that I feel that they tried to cram too many references into it.
Sometimes you’ll have a great scene, and then no transition at all and jump to a movie reference that doesn’t have anything to do with anything, and then back to the « plot ». Some bigger connecting points are missing.
The Longlegs bit, as well as the Candyman one come to mind.
They have about an 18-year backlogs of references to pull from, and you can almost feel their frustration with how many they stuck with in the end.
They should have done it like the Final destination theme park one, in the background, with everyone dying. It’s a nod, it’s very well done, it’s for the audience and it doesn’t take anything away from your movie.
Then again, being safe never mattered to them, so it’s fun to see that energy in action again.
They call out the Epstein files, the republicans being racists, the pronouns war, police brutality, the MeToo movement, but all between pee jokes.
Are there too many gay jokes ? Yes. Dick jokes ? Yes also.
But we knew what we were getting into.
Fan service vs continuity
There are a few points here and there that bummed me out, like, they could have given the double personalities to Doofy instead of resetting his character back to square one (but I’m glad that he now has a kid’s camera as a bodycam). And I definitely expected Squid Game, not a K-pop Demon Hunters song from Shorty, haha.
But I loooooved that they introduced legacy characters only to kill them off.
They really don’t give a shit about death either way, or continuity, so it’s amazing.
Coming from someone who watched it all, the nods to Get Out, Weapons, M3GAN, and the end credits with Brosferatu and Longlegs worked really well. The White Chicks cameo during the Substance bit was clearly a gift for the fans.
Was it worth waiting 13 years for ? Not really, but all in all, it’s a fun time, and much better than 4 & 5.
I hoped to laugh a bit more, but here we are.
Whether the PC culture is ok with it or not.
And DEI is right : « Stop banning books : except Harry Potter »
My rating : 3/5 bats
