The Gustave Flaubert museum is located in Rouen, France.
Opened in 1945, it now houses a curiosities cabinet and a medical museum.
Flaubert was born there in 1821 and his father used to be a surgeon in the hospital part of the building.
Most of the furniture and the original architecture are still as they were way back when as the building has been listed.
It displays some of the darkest parts of history.
From mummies to anti-women propaganda for « causing » syphilis, to the replica of the “foundling wheels” used to anonymously abandon newborn babies. It makes you appreciate being born a bit later.
One of the exhibits is an anatomical birth replica made out of fabric.
They also showcase different poop consistencies. For science.
It’s an interesting little bit of history and literature. From Madame Bovary to used bedpans.
The visit is free, so if you’re ever in Normandy, it is worth a trip.
