Dracula is a Netflix special series that runs through 3 episodes.
Following Bram Stoker‘s story through Transylvania, it then switches to the Demeter, only for Dracula to arrive in modern-day England.
It has been memed to death with the toilet bit, but it’s sadly not all fun and games…
While I do appreciate the chemistry between Dracula and Sister Agatha, most of the episodes drag story-wise.
And it’s a bummer when you have such a rich story to pull from.
The sarcastic tone is my jam, the jokes, the disdain, and even the effects work.
The bats, the wolves, no notes !
Even when he peels off Jonathan’s skin is really well done. The fact that it takes so much for him to shapeshift but he still does it to fuck with people is the fun we should have gotten all along.
But somewhere along the way we get to watch something that isn’t that interesting, sadly.
It is well acted and on paper could be great, it goes where some other media wouldn’t, notably with the baby’s death, killing a child vampire and even embracing Dracula’s gay side.
But it spends too much time with side characters we don’t really care about.
And the ending…
Look if they decided to keep Agatha alive through whatever reason, and have THAT ending, then yes, I’d be behind it. They’d still have had to cut some Lucy parts because it wasn’t really interesting, but…
Having a doppelgänger get a romantic ending with Dracula when they’ve only met once 3 months prior breaks my brain.
I was raised on Disney stuff and grew up through the Buffy era. I can deal with romance and death.
This isn’t it. At all.
Just imagine if we had just watched Angelus kill himself after talking for 30 minutes with a Buffybot he’d only met once before. It would have made no sense, right ?
Agatha should have been the one there, not Zoe.
And the 3-month delay didn’t help anything. I get that it was to show that Lucy had fallen for him, but even that relationship didn’t truly work. And it was only a plot point to Zoe’s understanding, so why sooooo much time spent on that storyline ?
It’s a bummer as well, because if it had a fully fleshed out season, cutting out the extra stuff and really focusing on what mattered, it had potential. Real potential.
It most likely will have a little cult following in the years to come, but I don’t really see it making waves in the long run. Sadly.
Not in a world where Gary Oldman’s Dracula exists.
Not in a world where Nosferatu exists.
It didn’t have the backbone to carry its name.
