Something very bad is going to happen came out on netflix in 2026, in what can only be called « Mediocre men horror ».
After Send Help, Obsession and Backrooms, we dive right back into the unspoken villains of 2026, men.
Following the footsteps of Evil Dead Burn, everything could have been avoided if the male lead actually listened and/or had a backbone.
Ignoring the signs ?
We follow Rachel and Nikky, an engaged couple about to get married in a snowy cabin in the mountains.
The pilot and the finale are more horror oriented, while the rest of it all feels more like a thriller.
Going episode by episode would take wayyy too long, so I’ll rush this entry a little bit.
Rachel has a sort of 6th sense that she follows, as it was proven right time and again. Her gut feeling probably saved a baby, but this storyline vanishes to be replaced by a potential family curse.
The pilot centers around a very specific vibe that sucked me right in.
They found a sweet spot between paranoia and reading the signs.
As the tv show is a stand-alone one, we get a lot of red herrings.
They mention a serial killer, Rachel thinks she’s about to get murdered, there is a mystery, doubts of satanism and even a boogeyman. They went full steam ahead there with the melting pot.
The 8 episode system works very well, there are no real fillers, no dead moments, and it is entertaining to watch.
Up to a point.
Family dynamics
I was rooting for Nikky, the fiancé, at the beginning, until the eventual realization that he is the Ross Geller of the horror genre. A whiny little boy who clings onto relationships he doesn’t even fight for.
Jules, his brother, is a capable dude, the trauma he had since childhood made him a bit weird and snarky, but he is very decent, understands the issue and trusts the truth. He reacts to what is said to him. That saved the family for me.
The mother is a bit useless, so is the father…
Portia, the sister is… too much ? Too blunt ? Just annoying really.
And Nell, Jules’s wife is great. But honestly it might be because I really liked her in the Misfits tv show.
Victoria Pedretti plays Rachel’s mom in a flashback. That’s a nice little nod to us horror fans, as she is our horror queen -against her will- since playing in the haunting of hill house.
The second she shows on screen, the gore follows and doesn’t disappoint.
She leads us to the family curse plot, which is a very gloomy one.
The curse
You have to be a 100% certain that you are marrying your soulmate, or you hemorrhage to death the night of your wedding day. Destroying your dress in the process (which should be the least of your worries).
If you choose to bail and cancel the ceremony, the curse is spread onto your significant other’s family and you become somewhat immortal, having to witness countless deaths in the process.
Obviously the investigation part begins from there, as they need proof that the curse is real.
They even include possession, and a very disgusting ritual.
Overall it’s a really good tv show, but if I were to nitpick, I’d blame the timing of the finale a bit.
It is physically impossible to do all that she did in 30 minutes, and look the way she did at the altar.
You can’t have sex, steal stuff, cut your toe and still act normal walking in heels without a drop of sweat afterwards…
And Nikky.
Nevermind the timing. I blame Nikky.
But his decision gave us a looooot of gore, so I’ll give him some points.
He had a traumatic week as well, but the way he backstabbed her still doesn’t sit well with me.
It’s nice to see a decent TV show decide to stop after one season.
It takes me back to the days of American horror story (before the following seasons), Harper’s Island and The haunting of Hill House.
You have a tight plot, developed characters and a good ending. That’s what makes it worth watching in the end.
