Blink Twice came out in 2024 and was directed by Zoë Kravitz.
She is steadily making a name for herself in the movie industry.
Going in blind, the beginning feels a bit like a teenage girl’s fan fiction.
Frida has a huge crush on a celebrity, works at their event, gets noticed and invited back to the after party on their private island. Wattpad would have a field day.
It would feel like a dream to most young girls.
Except the island is closer to the Epstein one than paradise.
Stranger danger who ?
Going on a stranger’s private jet is wild ; going there on holiday without anything other than a cocktail dress is insane.
At least they’re sane enough to mention sacrificial rituals as a joke, but clearly no one taught them about stranger danger.
Everything feels very chaotic for a while. Passive agressive or flirty, depending on the characters.
The only real thing we see is how the friends interact, the rest feels like an act or a weird fever dream because of the drugs.
Jess’s disappearance really kicks things off, and I liked the snake venom’s analogy.
How everything was explained through jumpcut memories felt real. It’s often used as a cliché, but considering the circumstances and the trauma, it works.
« All trauma goes. »
What. A. Nightmare.
Payback’s a bitch
I can’t express how much I love that the rapists got their instant payback the second their memories came back for Camilla and Heather. It was glorious.
More often than not, in real life, the victims have to spend thousands on a trial, face incredible dehumanisation from the rapist’s lawyer and all that for a 6 months sentence, if it even comes to that.
Seeing the girls beating them to death in the movie felt therapeutic, even for just a second.
They even included a male victim, which most movies tend to brush over.
Violence against men is less frequent in percentage, but it does need to be included in the bigger fight, so kudos.
I’ve spent the entire movie wondering who was walking behind them all blurry… Turns out it’s Stan.
Fuck Stan. You go, Sarah, killing him like 20 seconds after he finally got a name !
A little too close to home
As expected, the island is a well oiled machine. Similar to the Epstein case.
Thousands of victims. Billions of trauma. And white dudes abusing their status.
Stacy being their Ghislaine Maxwell.
Sadly in our world the victims there didn’t get to forget. And they will never get justice.
Considering the subject matter, and everything linked to it, it’s actually a decent watch.
I was expecting things to go this route, but was afraid they’d mishandle it.
I’m glad Frida and Sarah got to fight back and kick their asses.
PSA
And for all the fanfiction ladies out there, be careful.
Avoid trusting the Epsteins, the rock band you love, or the idols from the Burning Sun scandal of the world.
There will always be victims, but there won’t always be justice.
Camilla and Heather represent the numerous ones we’ll never get to know about.
The badass maid (who for some reason doesn’t have a name) is the MVP for breaking the cycle.
Reality check
Buuuuuut. The ending. I get what they went for… it just didn’t work for me.
Frida marrying her abuser is too risky. What if he remembers one day ? She can’t have a hold of him forever. I didn’t like the danger she put herself in for money. I’m all for giving him a taste of his own medicine, even if it turns the victim into one of the bad guys, but it’s just too dangerous and stupid.
Again, I get it… but no.
My rating : 3,5/5 bats
