Delirium is a movie that came out in 2018, under Blumhouse.
A 90s cast in a horror movie
From the first few shots, we get a weird 90s crossover with the Mayor from Buffy (Harry Groener) and Eric from That ’70s Show (Topher Grace) talking in a mental institution.
And then it gets… weird.
But sadly not in a good way.
It somehow feels like the writers have never had small talk with another human being.
What are these interactions ? Who are these people ?
From the cop slapping the butt of a statue, to the casual trespassing of the clerk, none of it feels real.
We’re seeing the story from an unreliable narrator, so I thought it was part of the plot, but having seen the ending, it doesn’t make any sense.
The downfall of Blumhouse ?
Blumhouse used to be such a massive household name, you know. What happened ?
Between this, Night swim, Imaginary and so many others, they seem to be dropping the ball like crazy in the past few years.
The jump scares are lame, the reactions are ridiculous at best and the editing is crazy…
It’s weird because you know Topher can act at least a bit decently.
Even on low budget, horror movies can be scary. Thrillers can be thrilling. But not this one.
The VFX is nice, the decor and the architecture of the manor are well made, but everything else feels like it was made by highschool students after gaming for too long. How did this get an average viewer score ?
How can the script (and the reviews) just brush aside a manipulative rape attempt from the cop ?
Are we that desperate for horror ?
« Trust your brain, not your eyes » while holding something is another thing that exists and shouldn’t. Like, what ?
It’s even like we’re only watching a mashup of the cutscenes from a videogame at some point.
His adult brother being played by Drazic (Callan Mulvey) destroyed my attention span. Everything spiralled out of control. This went from low-tier horror to 90s reunion again so fast.
It doesn’t really know what tone to use most of the time. What was that scene with the grapejuice ?
Is.. Is it supposed to be a horror comedy now ? While mentioning suicide, all in one go ?
That’s either very bold or completely crazy.
Plot holes and questionable choices
And can we talk about the timeline for a second please ?
He got discharged from the hospital, got told his father died, that the dog was euthanized, hallucinated like crazy, almost got assaulted, and got a stranger to fall for him in… 3 days ? What ?
The tongue in the electrical box fried my brain. What if it needed maintenance ? What was the end game here ?
Get your son incarcerated again ?
We all knew the mom was the one behind the phonecalls and the sex mask, right ? Like it wasn’t a surprise ?
Sooooo, was she supposed to starve to death ? Because it’s been 8 days since the father’s suicide.
And the ending. It broke me.
The mom’s body completely dissappeared while the room flooded and none of them noticed ?
The glass made the same sound as in the Titanic movie. I was fully done by this point but still. It hurts.
The deaths are… fast. Too fast ?
I mean, I wouldn’t want this to last any longer, but like… it’s a bit anticlimactic, right ?
Everything else dragged on for soooo long.
The entire movie, everyone took 5 business days to react to something.
Why ? Tension ? Tension erases itself once we see the surprise you know. Staying another 5 seconds on the actor’s reaction when they should run, swim, climb or anything just doesn’t work.
We saw the danger, our brain analyzed it. We’d be out of there, not staring at the danger with our mouths open.
And we’re supposed to assume that the bunker was the exact same size as the pool right ? Because there was no water overflowing from the ladder. Yeah no, ok I know, I’m taking this too far.
But it did bother me.
Ending this on “Prisoner of love” is a bold choice for the end credits. Knowing the dad kept the mom locked up as a sex slave for 20 years and all. Bold.
And then the « produced by Leonardo Dicaprio » popped up. I wasn’t ready for one last suprise.
This. This. I’m speechless.
It has a 5,7/10 on IMDB.
I know I’m being mean here, uselessly so, as I’m not creating any good movies myself… but… most of the cast were superstars. They can act. The plot could have been good. This could have been great.
Really. Just… rewrite everything. Not in a Resident Evil ‘s outcast gameplay way.
Please.
