Located near the world famous Greyfriars cemetery in Scotland, it is housed in a former 19th-century church.
The place has 3 floors that feature décor inspired by characters from Mary Shelley‘s novel.
Just picture spending time amongst the dead at the cemetery, saying hi to the statue of Greyfriars Bobby and ending the evening with a beer in a Frankenstein monster’s themed church afterwards ?
It could have been a living-dead dream, right ?
Sadly the pub is mainly a tourist trap.
It offers karaoke nights, giant screen sports viewings, game nights, concerts, and student nights.
Please note, however, that you must be 18 or over to enter after 8 p.m.!
It is advisable to book a table in advance if you are going with a group as it tends to get filled fast.
Vegan options are available, as well as occasional requests to the DJ for personalized messages.
The music is fairly mainstream on the ground floor.
It’s a bummer because the place would be perfect for emo nights.
A visit from the grave
Sometimes, during the night, Victor Frankenstein‘s monster makes an appearance in the main room.
Grunts, lightning and all.
The music stops as he descends from the ceiling. And then ? Everything returns to normal.
The pub is open every day from noon to midnight, and until 1 a.m on Fridays and Saturdays.
While it has been reviewed everywhere online, and is pretty average overall, I still booked it for my 30th birthday party. So yeah, for us weirdos ? It’s a good spot. Just for the monster’s visit.
Nostalgia hurts
Caretaker’s note : There was another spooky pub -back in ancient times (2012)- in downtown Edinburgh that beat this one with a stick. The Jekyll & Hyde.
The decor was “perfect”mad scientist” themed, the cocktails had quirky names, the basement was called the crypt, and if you drank the 7 deadly sins cocktail pitchers, you walked home with a free shirt.
It was a goth’s dream.
The toilets were hidden behind a library-style bookshelves wallpaper and almost impossible to find.
Once inside, everything was covered in blood paint.
The Jekyll & Hyde was everything the Frankenstein pub should be. Alternative music, weird vibes and horror.
It sadly closed 10 years ago, but still holds a place in my heart.
Did you already know about these places ?
